With a new year comes all the excitement of: what’s going to happen this year? Who am I going to be? What am I going to achieve? How am I going to look? But we also jump in with a fair amount of anxiety because we feel the need to improve, to be more, to look better, eat better, earn more, spend less, spend more time with family and friends, focus more on self-improvement. Egads. There’s one thing that doesn’t change with the New Year; we still only have 24 hours in a day to achieve all our goals.

Did you know:

  • Over 70% of resolutions made for 2017 are about losing weight and living healthier.
  • The #1 resolution of all time is to lose weight.
  • The resolution broken more than any other is…to lose weight.

Are you seeing a pattern here?

Why, why, why do we keep making this resolution? We all know what Einstein says about trying the same thing over and over in the hopes of achieving a new result. Yes—it’s insanity. So why do we keep making a resolution we know we’re going to break? I’ll take it one step further: why are we making resolutions at all?

For the last five years I’ve booted New Year’s resolutions and replaced them with a one-word theme. I pick ONE WORD and use it to drive my life. Here’s some words from past years:

GRATEFUL. This was my first word. I’m so grateful I booted a resolution in exchange for being “grateful” all year long. Every time something good happened, I stopped, dropped, and said a prayer of thanks. Every time I was faced with adversity, the voice in my head said, “Yo, Lisa, your word is grateful, so find the good in this, say ‘thanks,’ and move on.” And it worked.

TIME. The effects of choosing this word blew my mind. Suddenly I had enough time for everything—exercise, my daughter, the business. And I was on time, too. I went from being five minutes late, to the gal who arrived before everyone. By mid-year, I realized the daily panic I’d always felt from “deadlines” had disappeared.

FEARLESS. When you make your word “fearless,” it will change every answer to every question you’re presented with throughout the calendar year (and there are thousands). Can I take on project X at work? What would fearless Lisa do? I’m invited to a summer party, but I won’t really know anyone there. What would fearless Lisa do? See how that word works.

Now go back to the most common resolution of all time—to be more fit. Now let go of this resolution nonsense that’s been proven to fail and find yourself a WORD that you can LIVE in 2017. Here’s a few ideas:

  • You’re invited on a five-mile hike. Your word is “active,” making this decision a no-brainer.
  • You have to fit in one-hour of emails, two-hours of kids sports, a workout, and a family dinner…and it’s Saturday?! Take a breath, think about your word, and “focus.”
  • Wow, this word could be mad fun. “Green” can mean healthy food like vegetables, recycling, green grass—as in an afternoon in the park with your trainer (hint hint).
  • Can you imagine all the things you’re going to achieve with a word like “strength” in your corner? Strength of body, strength of mind, strength of spirit. ’Nuf said.
  • Do you need more “harmony” in your life? One great way to get that: Exercise. Before long your mantra will be: “Keep calm and carry on.”
  • “I am in control of my day, my spending, my food choices, my free time; I got this.” What if all your choices in 2017 stemmed from knowing you are in full control of your choices? (I just exhaled a sigh of relief, too.)

Mobile Fitness Group wishes you an amazing 2017. We hope you let go of the number on the scale and empower yourself with a one-word theme! I know I’m going into this new year GRATEFUL for taking the TIME to live my life FEARLESSLY.
